The devotion began on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where hermits lived lives of silence and prayer in the spirit of the prophet Elijah. They placed themselves under Mary’s care, honouring her as their Mother and model of faith.
Central to this devotion is the Brown Scapular, which Our Lady is traditionally said to have given to St Simon Stock in the 13th century. The scapular became a sign of belonging to Mary, a reminder to live a Christian life of prayer, humility, and charity, and a symbol of her maternal protection.
